German, pre-WW2 manufacture S1884/98 bayonet. Also known as the K98, as it was designed for use with the Karabiner 98 kurz, bolt-action rifle. The K98k rifle was the standard service rifle used by the German Wehrmacht during WW2.
This bayonet was made in 1935 by WKC and bears the makers’ dispersal code and letter G date mark.
The 250mm single-edged blade has a deep single fuller on both sides and is in excellent condition retaining its original black finish with some mild scabbard wear. The blade retains its original factory edge.
The blade is marked on the ricasso with the maker’s coded identification. S/174G. S/174 identifies the firm WKC (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co.) and the letter G identifies the production year as being 1935. The obverse ricasso bears the number 6111 over the letter G.
The steel pommel retains its black finish and bears two inspection stamps. The flash protector is also stamped with a waffenampt, as is the press stud, which is in good working order.
The wooden grip scales have use and age-related wear and dings. The hardwood scales are held firmly in place with the original screws.
The non-matching numbered steel scabbard is in excellent condition. The front of the scabbard is marked above the frog stud with the number 3442 over the letter t. The back is marked at the top with the date, 42 and maker’s mark; cof, for Carl Eickhorn. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a great example of the famous German WW2 bayonet.
