A scarce George III period Mameluke sabre made by the Solingen maker, Jean Schimmelbusch. The sabre dates to the last quarter of the 18th Century and is engraved with King George III pre-1801 royal coat of arms.

The 750mm highly curved blade has a flat spine tapering to a 240mm upper false edge with a double-edged clip point. The blade is in very good condition with a pale, speckled patina and a small patch of stable pitting on the Royal cypher. The single-edge has one small nick at the centre of percussion. The blade retains a sharp edge.

The blade is engraved with floral motifs and a stand of arms above the Royal coat of arms that was used from 1714 until 1801. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a trophy of arms, the Royal cypher of King George III and floral sprays. The ricasso is engraved with the maker’s details, “Schimmelbusch & Fils.” The obverse ricasso is engraved “Solingen.”

The polished steel guard is of typical Mameluke form with narrow, tapering double languets and bud finials on the crosspiece. The crosspiece is in good condition with shallow pitting. The horn grip scales are in good condition with age and use related wear and colouration. One scale has a chip above the sword knot eye. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sabre is complete with its polished steel scabbard with two suspension rings and ornate shoe. The scabbard is in good condition with shallow pitting and a small dent above the second suspension band. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
