Dissatisfaction with the previous patterns of naval cutlass led to the design and adoption of a new pattern in 1889.

The 710mm single-edged blade is un-fullered and has a flat spine. The straight blade is double-edged for the final 220mm and terminates in a spear point.

The blade is in very good condition, with faint cleaning scratches and scabbard wear along its length. The ricasso is stamped with the WD and arrow mark of the War Department, an Enfield factory stamp and a bend test X. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the issue date of 1890 and two Enfield factory inspectors’ stamps, the second stamp being beneath the leather washer.

The shape of the steel bowl guard is inspired by the British 1882 pattern cavalry sword and has a turned over edge and lanyard slot. Originally, the guard would have been polished steel but at some point, the guard was painted black, probably to help prevent rust at sea. The guard is in great condition with small areas of loss to the paint. The ridged cast iron grip is in great condition and the blade is firm in the hilt.

The cutlass is complete with a black leather scabbard with steel locket and chape. The locket and chape are bright and free of rust. The chape has a couple of tiny, use-related dings. The leather of the scabbard is in very good condition with a slight crazing to the original finish. The cutlass sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of a British 1889 pattern Royal Naval cutlass.
