This scarce presentation Mk1 Type II 1888 pattern bayonet is in excellent condition for its 129 years of age and is highly collectable.

The 305mm double-edged blade is nicely marked on the ricasso with a flat crown above VR (Victoria Regina) and the production date, 8 ‘92 (August 1892). The obverse ricasso is marked with an Enfield inspection mark, the British War Department broad arrow, and “WD” and a bend test stamp. The blade spine also bears two Enfield inspection stamps. The blade is in excellent condition and retains its original polish with some minor age and use related marks and scratches.

The stag antler grip is firm and in excellent condition. This is the first time I have encountered an 1888 bayonet with antler grip scales. The scales are likely to be a post-production addition and may have been added to make the bayonet a presentation piece. The steel crosspiece and pommel are bright and free from rust. The pommel is stamped with the number 547. The press-stud locking mechanism is in perfect working order.

The bayonet is complete with its matching, Enfield made black leather scabbard with steel mounts. The steel locket and chape are stamped with Enfield inspection marks and the throat bears the matching number 547.  The leather is in good condition and is stamped with a matching production date, ’92, a WD and two Enfield inspection stamps. The stitching is intact and firm.

The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is an excellent example of the iconic British Boer War and Boxer Rebellion bayonet that has been customised with stag antler grips.
