This Rifle officer’s dress sword has an 824mm single-edged blade of the 1895 pattern, with a dumbbell cross-section and a broad single fuller. The blade tapers to a double-edged spear point. The spine is 8mm thick and the blade is 19mm wide at the ricasso.

The blades’ only decoration is a cartouche containing the owners’ initials. All other etching has been polished out. The spine bears the serial number 6102, which may be a Mole number. The ricasso bears a brass proof stud bearing the word “Proved” above a Fleur de Lys. The blade is in overall good condition.

The Gothic steel guard is in good condition and incorporates an oval cartouche containing the crowned, strung horn badge of the Rifle Regiment. The guard is bright and rust free. The shagreen grip is in good condition. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The plated steel scabbard has a German silver throat and two suspension rings. The scabbard is in overall great condition with minimal speckles to the plating. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly.

This is an fair example of a Victorian Rifle officer’s dress sword.
