This is a rare holster for the American Colt 1860 revolver (it will also take the 1851 Navy revolver).
The holster is the US cavalry pattern but is not marked for the cavalry, as it was a private purchase item. In late 19th Century America, either shopping was done by mail order, with purchases taking months to arrive if at all, or local artisans made copies of the latest models and fashions. This holster was most likely made by a town saddler/leather worker in the style of the US cavalry holster.
The leather is strong and all seams and stitching are intact and firm. There is mild crazing to the leather along the folded edge and wear consistent with the housing of a revolver. The revolver’s hammer has left an impression and worn area on the leather and the bulge/shape of the cylinder can be seen.
This is a genuine and highly sought after antique holster for the famous Colt revolver.
