Early 20th Century Indian fighting Bullova from Chota Nagpur.
This is an interesting early 20th Century Indian battle axe which is traditionally carried by the men of the Chota Nagpur region. Now-a-days they are rarely carried and are mainly for ceremonial purposes. In the early to mid-20th Century they were still occasionally used in conflict.
The overall length of the axe is 80cm with a moustache shaped steel blade of 23cm. The blade has three narrow fullers, on a rectangular section stem with a cylindrical poll at the back of which is a flat hammer head engraved with what looks like a flower.
The stem and hammer head are decorated with engraved geometric patterns.
A faceted spike emanates from decorative brass mount on top of the haft.
The haft is of an Indian hardwood and has a decorative bone pommel terminating in a rounded iron spike.
