This large Zulu iwisa dates to the late 19th Century and was probably a Zulu War battlefield trophy brought to the UK by a returning British soldier. The iwisa was a very important weapon to the Zulu, second only to the iklwa. Traditionally a Zulu warrior carried an iklwa (stabbing spear), iwisa (club) and two isijula (throwing spears).
The large head has a depth of 79mm and a diameter of 80mm. The circumference is 266mm.
The slightly curved haft has a dark patina and flares towards the end. The iwisa is in good condition with age cracks and use related dings and wear.
The iwisa has a total length of 740mm.
This Anglo-Zulu War knobkerrie will enhance any collection.
