This is a great example of a Zulu Iklwa with a long blade, dating to the first half of the 19th Century. Many Zulu weapons, including this one, were collected by the British troops and brought back to the UK as souvenirs after the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

The 425mm blade has a raised medial ridge. The blade is 38mm at its widest and is in good condition with a great patina that add to its character.

While the Zulu King was responsible for providing his warriors with shields, the individual Zulu warrior was responsible for his own weaponry. This iklwa was probably the property of an experienced warrior, one that would have fought as part of the centre (the boss of the horns) in the Zulu bulls-head attack formation.

The blade is secured firmly within the haft and a cow tail strengthens the bond. The use of a cow tail is also an indication of the warriors’ high status. A Zulu’s wealth was measured in cattle and cow tails were only available after one was killed. This was usually only done on special occasions. Cow tails were also awarded by the King as a reward for service or bravery. The section of cow tail is in good condition and the blade is firm in the haft.

The 640mm haft is thick, with a large flared end. The haft has a wonderful patina. The total length of the iklwa is 1060mm/106cm.

This excellent  mid-9th Century Iklwa will make a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War collection.
