This Royal Scots officer’s broadsword bears the serial number 45995, indicating that it was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company in 1914.  The large fighting blade was factory sharpened for service in WW1.

The 825mm double-edged (broadsword) blade has a deep central fuller and terminates in a spear point. The blade retains its factory sharpened edges and is in near mint condition with just a small patch of pale tarnish at the mid-point on one side. The blade is etched with thistles and foliate scrollwork. The obverse is similarly etched.

The ricasso bears a brass proof disk faintly showing the scripted HW of the Wilkinson Sword Company. The obverse ricasso is blank. The blade retains its original washer. The spine of the ricasso is stamped with the Wilkinson serial number 45995.

Cross-hilt guards were first use by Highland infantry regiments in the 1860’s and were formally accepted in Army Regulations in 1883. The cross guard for active service was interchangeable with the basket guard for dress occasions.

This cross-hilt is of the pattern used by the Royal Scots. The guard and pommel of the hilt are in good condition, with a faint speckled patina on the cross bar and cleaned shallow pitting on the finials. The shagreen wrapped grip is in very good condition and the twisted wire is intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The broadsword is complete with its brown leather covered field service scabbard with a steel chape ending in a ball. The scabbard is in good condition with minor age and use-related scuffs. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is an excellent example of a Royal Scots officer’s broadsword made by the Wilkinson Sword Company at the onset of WW1.
