This is a fantastic Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise’s) Regimental Sergeant Major’s cross hilted broadsword made by Sanderson & Newbould of Sheffield. Broadswords issued to Regimental Sergeant Majors are rare.

The 840mm double-edged (broadsword) blade has twin, three-quarter length fullers and terminates in a spear point. Unlike the plain bladed staff sergeant’s swords, this broadsword blade is etched on a matt background with Scottish thistles and foliate scrollwork above and below the crowned royal cypher of King George V. The forte bears the regiments’ name, “Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.”

The obverse of the blade is deeply etched with thistles and foliate scrollwork and a rayed crown above a shield showing the royal arms of George V. The forte is etched with the badge of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, a wild cat and a boars’ head within a wreath, showing the twin mottos, “Ne Obliviscaris” and “Sans Peur,” meaning, “Never Forget” and “Without Fear.”

The ricasso bears the makers details, Sanderson Bros & Newbould, Sheffield. The obverse ricasso is stamped with a crossed flags proof mark and an Enfield inspection stamp.

The blade and etching are in fantastic, near mint condition.

The cross-hilt pattern of guard was formally accepted in Dress Regulations in 1883. The cross guard being for active service. The guard and pommel of the hilt are in excellent condition. The shagreen wrapped grip is in excellent condition and the twisted silver wire is intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The broadsword is complete with its brown leather covered field service scabbard with a plated steel locket and chape. The chape with a ball terminal. The scabbard is in very good condition with minor age and use-related scuffs and wear to the frog strap. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a near mint condition example of a rare WW1 Regimental Sergeant Major’s broadsword of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
