This Scottish military sword is a great example of an 1828 pattern Highland infantry basket hilted broadsword. The sword was made between 1828 and 1845.
The 820mm double-edged (broadsword) blade is 32mm wide at the ricasso. The blade has twin central fullers and terminates in a spear point. The edges were service sharpened and the blade is in good condition with some tiny nicks to the cutting edges.
The blade is un-etched except for an acanthus-style pattern above a worn (unreadable) maker’s details on the forte.
The regulation iron basket-hilt is composed of rounded bars united by heart-pierced junction plates. The shagreen wrapped grip is in good condition and the twisted wire is intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.
This is a great example of a scarce, early production 1828 pattern basket hilted broadsword.
