This Indo-Persian Khanjar dagger has a white stone hilt (probably marble) and an Indian crucible steel blade. Crucible steel originated from northern India from where it was traded along the caravan routes. Europeans first encountered this type of patterned steel in Persia (Syria) which lead to it becoming known as Damascus steel.

The double-edged blade is 24.5cm long and shows a beautiful wave pattern created by the numerous folds in the steel. The pattern in the steel can be felt with the tip of one’s finger. The over-all length of the dagger is 37cm.

The blade has a flattened oval cross-section with sharp serrations on both edges for approximately 14cm after which the plain double edges taper to a spear point. The blade is sharp.

The blade has the grey patina typical of aged, high carbon steel and is free of rust.

The tang of the blade is fixed into the stone hilt in the typical fashion, using very strong natural resin. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The white stone hilt has worn beautifully smooth from contact and is very tactile.

This is a truly beautiful knife. There are many modern copies of Indian knives on the market today. They are poorly made and mass-produced. This is not one of them.
