The Indian No.1 Mk III* pattern bayonet was made for use with the British short magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle. This bayonet was produced at the Rifle Factory Ishapore in September 1944.

The 304mm single-edged blade has a rounded spine and upper false edge. The un-fullered blade terminates in an asymmetrical spear point. The blade is in excellent condition with its original factory edge.

The ricasso retains its original blueing and is stamped with the Royal cypher of King George VI, Emperor of India, a crowned G.R.I, over the pattern designation. As with most Mk III* bayonets, this bayonet utilises the Mk II* blade. The manufacture date of ‘9 ’44 (September 1944) is stamped above the maker’s mark. R. F. I. The obverse ricasso bears three inspection/acceptance stamps.

The cross-piece, muzzle ring and distinctive squared pommel are in excellent condition and retain their original blued finish. The locking catch is in crisp working order. The wooden grip scales are in good condition with some age related marks and colouration. The scales are held firmly in place with two blued screws.

The bayonet is complete with its leather scabbard with blued steel locket and chape. The scabbard is in very good condition. The leather is strong and the stitching is intact. The steel locket and chape retain most of their original blued finish. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of a late WW2 Indian No.1 Mk III* bayonet.
