Indian tulwar come in a variety of blade shapes and hilt patterns. This 19th Century tulwar is of more typical form and was likely produced by a local armoury for troop issue. In the south of India these blades with a more forward curve are known as katti. Katti, along with tulwar is a generic word for "sword."

The 750mm broad, curved steel blade has a flat spine and terminates in a spear point. The single-edged blade is double-edged for the last 180mm and has three thin fullers on both sides. The blade is in good condition and free of rust. The blade has been sharpened and has use and age related marks. The forte has a number of punched dots arranged in triangles of three dots. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The steel hilt is of baluster form with flattened, dome finials to the crosspiece and long, square edged languets. The hilt has some minor pitting and casting marks and a pattern of incised marks at the junction of the disk pommel, which could be a maker’s mark. The disc pommel incorporates a radial sun disc and skull crusher pommel stud.
