This is an excellent example of an Imperial Japanese Army Officer’s dress sword.
The 738mm single edged, katana-style blade has a slightly rounded spine above a long narrow fuller that continues almost to the point. The blade is in excellent condition and retains its original washer.
The brass hilt is in excellent condition and was clearly influenced by the hilts of mid-19th Century French army swords such as the M1845. The black horn grip is in excellent condition but lacks the twisted wire. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The sword is complete with its steel scabbard with a single suspension ring. The scabbard is in good condition with areas of mild tarnish and very minor pitting and a shallow ding on one side above the drag. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a great example of a Japanese army, company grade officer’s dress sword with a near pristine blade.
