The KD 1889 (Kavalerie Degen 1889) was carried by all light cavalry troopers of the Imperial German Army until after the Great War. This Prussian model is in near mint condition and named to the Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 3 (Hunter-Regiment of Horse).

The 808mm single-edged blade has a slightly rounded spine that is etched for almost half of its length with foliate scroll-work The blade has a single, three-quarter length fuller immediately below the spine and terminates in a spear point.

The blade is beautifully etched with oak leaves, acorns and laurels above a wreathed trophy of arms, followed by a matt panel containing the regimental designation “Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 3.” Below the panel is a trooper on horseback. The forte is stamped with the makers mark, “W. K & C (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie.) with the king’s head and knight’s helmet logos.

The obverse is etched with similar foliate and geometric designs, a horses’ head and a cavalry regiment at charge. The blade is in near mint condition and is unsharpened.

The nickel plated guard has a folding section incorporating the Prussian eagle. The guard is in excellent condition with only a tiny spot of damage to the plating at the juncture of the guard and pommel. The contoured composite grip is in excellent condition and the blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its original blackened steel scabbard with a fixed suspension ring and bar. The scabbard is in very good condition, free of dents and with only minor loss and wear to the paint on the shoe.

This is an excellent example of a Great War period German (Prussian) cavalry sword model 1889.
