This is the iconic French model 1822 heavy cavalry sabre. This sword however was not made or used by the French heavy cavalry, it is likely that it was German made for export to another European country, such as Belgium.

The 870mm single-edged Montmorency blade has a broad, flat spine with a wide, shallow fuller running for 690mm of its length. A shorter, narrow fuller runs immediately below the spine. The blade has a slight curve and terminates in a narrow hatchet point.  The blade is in good condition with some use related marks and only a few pale spots of tarnish. The blade has some small service nicks and retains a fighting edge.

The blade retains its thick leather washer and is without manufacturers markings. These could have been polished out over time but it is just as likely that the sword was not made in France.

The brass four-bar guard is in good condition with slight dings and marks consistent with age and use. The knuckle bow has three clear stamps but these are not French. They may be Belgian. The leather wrapped grip and twisted brass wire are in great condition. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its polished steel scabbard with two suspension rings and asymmetrical drag. There is a small area of loss of the brass braise on the scabbard shoe. The scabbard has pitting but has been cleaned and is rust free. The iron remains thick and strong and the scabbard is in generally good condition. The sword draws and sheathes smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a scarce Model 1822 heavy cavalry sabre that was probably in service with the Belgian cavalry. The Belgian guides regiment were known to have also used this model of sabre.
