This is a great example of a French M1874 Gras epee bayonet made at the Tulle armoury and complete with its matching numbered scabbard.
The Gras bayonet was the last of the French sword bayonets. It was manufactured to fit the French Model 1874 Gras Infantry Rifle that was produced until 1885.
The 524mm “T” section epee blade is in excellent condition and is engraved on the spine with the Tulle armoury name and the production date of January 1880. The ricasso is stamped with an armoury inspection poincon. The obverse ricasso bears the numeral, 3.
The solid brass pommel has a press-stud and external spring locking mechanism that works perfectly. The wooden grip scales are in excellent condition. The front of the steel crosspiece is marked with inspection stamps and the letter Z. The "blade-breaker" quillon is marked with three inspection and acceptance poincon and the serial number “86302.”
The rolled steel scabbard retains its blueing and is in excellent condition. The scabbard bears a matching serial number “86302” and inspection stamps. The ball finial at the foot of the scabbard bears an inspection stamp and the numeral 6.
This is an excellent, original and nicely marked example of a Tulle armoury production Gras bayonet complete with its matching numbered scabbard.
