Fine example of the famous French sword bayonet for the Chassepot rifled musket made by the St Etienne armoury in 1870.
The 575mm yataghan blade is in good condition with mild age related tarnish. The blade is engraved on the spine with the arsenal name and date of manufacture, October 1870.
The ricasso bears French inspection poincon marks and the obverse ricasso bears the numeral “1.”
The cross-piece is stamped with “L 165” and the hooked quillon bears three poincon marks.
The front of the cross-piece bears six additional stamps consisting of numerals and symbols.
The brass hilt in in excellent condition and the press stud and external spring mechanism work perfectly.
