This French Infantry short sword is the Model 1831, “glaive des troupes à pied modèle 1831,” known colloquially by the troops as the “coupe choux” meaning “cabbage chopper”. Its Neo-classical design was based on the Roman Gladius.

The 485mm double-edged blade has a flattened diamond cross-section and terminates in a spear point. The blade is in excellent condition, marked on the ricasso with the maker’s name, Talabot  F.s (Brothers), and the manufacture date of 1832 above “Paris.” The blade is clean and bright with some speckles of pale tarnish along the edges. The blade has been armoury/factory sharpened and retains its original polish.

The solid brass hilt has a grip patterned of 26 raised ribs. The hilt is stamped with the issue number “1014.”

The original issue scabbard is also in fantastic condition. The leather is sound and the stitching intact. The back of the scabbard has worn inspection marks and a faint letter “N” within a circle, which could indicate naval use, The sword sheaths and draws well and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of the famous French infantry short sword.
