This beautiful little European (probably French) hunting sword dates to the early 1700s. These short bladed swords were originally used for delivering the coup de grace to wounded game when hunting and were known in France as Couteau de Chasse. The versatility and small size of these swords meant that they soon became popular amongst naval and army officers fighting at close quarters. Royal Navy officers and men began referring to these weapons a “Cuttoes,” a nick-name derived from their French name.

The 344mm double-edged blade has a flattened diamond cross-section with two short fullers on each side. The narrow blade terminates in a spear point and appears to have been re-pointed, perhaps as a result of use and repeated sharpening. The blade is engraved with floral scrollwork with a “Man in the Moon” on each sides. The engraving is worn in places. The blade retains its sharp edges and is in generally good condition with areas of tarnish and shallow pitting.

The brass shell guard, knuckle bow, quillon and pommel are decorated with a scrolled floral motif. The brass hilt furniture is in great condition, as is the reeded ebony grip. The blade is firm in the hilt.

This is a lovely example of a dainty, early 18th Century hunting sword.
