This excellent French Mle 1829 mounted artillery trooper’s sabre was made in July, 1830, during the last days of the reign of King Charles X. The same month as the Second French Revolution.

The Second French Revolution, colloquially known as “The Three Glorious Days,” began on the 26th July 1830 and resulted in the abdication of Charles X who along with his family fled to England and the protection of Britain’s newly crowned King William IV.

The 800mm curved blade has a flat spine terminating in a narrow hatchet (almost an asymmetrical spear) point. A broad single fuller runs below the spine, ending 150mm from the point. The single-edged blade is in excellent condition with a service sharpened edge. The fighting edge has some tiny nicks and the point has a small chip. 191 year old swords are rarely in as good condition.

The spine is engraved with the date of manufacture and armoury details: Chatellerault, July 1830. The ricasso of the blade is stamped with two Chatellerault inspection poincon.

The brass hilt has a single knuckle bow with a thick disk quillon. The leather wrapped grip retains its twisted brass wire. The knuckle bow is stamped with various issue numbers and inspection marks. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sabre is complete with its polished iron scabbard with twin suspension rings. The first suspension band bears four issue/weapon numbers, three of which were cancelled with each subsequent re-issue. This sabre saw a lot of service! The mouth of the scabbard bears an inspection stamp. The scabbard is in excellent condition. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is an excellent and early example of the iconic French mounted artillery sabre.
