Beautiful William IV court sword made in 1837 and retailed by Joseph Stohwasser of London. King William IV of England reigned from June 1830 until June 1837.
The 770mm double-edged blade has a lenticular cross section and terminates in a spear point. The un-fullered blade is etched with foliate and floral scrollwork and a trophy of arms. The obverse is etched with foliate and floral scrollwork. The ricasso bears the retailers details, Stohwasser, No.1 Brook St., Bond St., London. Joseph Stohwasser traded from this address from 1837 to 1842.
The blade is in good condition with some wear to the etching and very shallow pitting.
The beautiful gilt brass hilt has a clam shell guard bearing the royal cypher of William IV with a decorative cross piece and knuckle bow and terminates in a coronet pommel. The wire bound grip is intact and tight and the blade is firm in the hilt.
This is a nice example of a scarce William IV court sword dating from the last few months of his reign.
