The Type D survival knife was introduced in the 1950’s and was initially produced by the Wilkinson Sword Company of London. The heavy-duty knife was well-made, strong and versatile and was issued to members of the British Special Forces and to RAF aircrew.

This later model Type-D survival knife was made in 2001 and judging by the scabbard with its multiple Velcro tabs, was probably for issue to aircrew. The date on the blade suggests that it was issued for deployment in Afghanistan.

The 178mm heavy, phosphate blackened blade has a thick, flat spine and terminates in a hatchet point. The un-fullered blade has a wedge-shaped cross section and retains a sharp single edge. The blade is in excellent condition and is deeply stamped with the NATO stores designation 127-8214 above the maker’s initials, JG and the date 2001 beside a Broad Arrow.

The black composite grip scales are secured to the full width, “solid” tang with three blackened rivets. The grip scales are in very good condition. The pommel has a lanyard inlet.

This Type D knife is complete with its black material scabbard with multiple Velcro fastening tabs. The scabbard is in very good condition.

This is a great example of an Afghanistan War period British military Type D survival knife.
