This white metal hilted officer’s hanger dates to the last half of the 18th Century and is of a type used by both the English and the American forces during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The hanger’s shorter blade was ideal for fighting on foot and was favoured by light infantry officers and by naval officers fighting on cramped decks.

The 655mm blade has a flat spine above a short fuller with a deep central fuller running almost to the point. The slightly curved blade is double-edged for the first 170mm.

The unetched blade is in very good condition with a light speckled patina. The blade retains a sharp fighting edge.

The white metal hilt is of typical stirrup form. The contoured horn grip is in excellent condition and the silver wire is intact and tight. The grip is solid and strong and the blade is held firmly within the hilt. The “white” metal tests as silver but is not hallmarked.

This is a mid-18th Century fighting officer’s hanger in great condition.
