This British Royal Artillery Officer’s Sword was the property of Lt. Robert Hall Kerr of the Royal Horse Artillery.

The 865mm single-edged blade has a flat spine and wide single fuller on both sides, tapering to a double-edged spear point. The blade is double-edged for the final 260mm and retains its fighting edge.

The blade is etched on one side with the winged lightning bolts of the Royal Artillery amidst foliate scrollwork. The obverse is etched with foliate scrollwork surrounding the Georgian crown and royal cypher of George V above a field gun and the motto, “UBIQUE.” The blade and etching are in very good condition. The etching is clear and the blade retains its polish with only minor speckles of tarnish.

The ricasso bears the etched initials RHK. The obverse bears a brass proof stud displaying the word “PROVED” over a fleur de Lys.

The 3-bar steel hilt is in good condition and retains its original plating. The ray skin grip is in good condition with use-related marks. The twisted wire binding is intact. The knurled steel back strap has a smooth oval pommel and rounded tang nut. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The 1901 pattern brown leather covered field scabbard in in fair condition. It feels as if there is cracking to the wooden inner as there is some give in the scabbard on one side. The leather outer is intact. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly in the scabbard.

This is a good example of a George V period artillery officers’ sword, property of a named and researchable officer. A photograph of Lt. Robert Hall Kerr on horseback accompanies the sword.
