The British Type D survival knife was introduced in the 1950’s and was produced by the Wilkinson Sword Company of London. This Wilkinson knife appears to be a variant of the Type D and dates to the same period. This rare knife is also likely to be an early fore-runner of the Wilkinson “Dartmoor” survival knife.
The 178mm heavy, Bowie-style blade is double-edged and terminates in a clip point. The unfullered blade retains very sharp edges. The blade is in good used condition with scuffs and scratches consistent with use.
This knife was formerly the property of a British Royal Marine and is believed to have been available to serving Royal Marines as a private purchase. The lack of Broad Arrow and NATO markings supports this knife as having been purchased as a personal weapon.
The base of the blade is etched with the Wilkinson Sword Company trademark incorporating the Royal Warrant of Queen Elizabeth II. The Wilkinson Sword Company was awarded Elizabeth II Royal Warrant in 1955.
The hardwood grip scales are secured to the full width, “solid” tang with two 1907 pattern screw bolts and nuts. Later examples of the Type D have the grips secured by copper rivets. The grip scales are in good condition with dings and patina consistent with age and use. The pommel has a lanyard inlet.
This early Wilkinson survival/combat knife is complete with its original leather scabbard. The scabbard is in good condition. The press-stud clasp on the retaining loop is in good working order.
This is a great and honest example of a rare, mid-20th Century British Military private purchase combat/survival knife made by the Wilkinson Sword Company.
