Rare Mk1 hooked quillon bayonet with its very rare Mk1 internal chape scabbard made by Sanderson in August 1909. The bayonet was issued to the 4th Battalion, The Prince of Wales’ Regiment (North Staffordshire Regiment).

The 4th battalion served as a garrison battalion in Guernsey from 1914 until 1916. The battalion was then posted to the Western Front and fought in France until the end of the war in 1918.

This is a rare bayonet. Rarer still is the No.1 Mk1 internal chape scabbard.

The 432mm, single edged blade has a long narrow fuller and rounded spine. The edge was service sharpened. The blade is bright and clean and is in good condition with a few small patches of very shallow pitting/tarnish along the spine and at the point.

The ricasso retains its blueing and is marked with the crowned cypher of Edward VII over the pattern date 1907 and the date of manufacture 8 ‘09 below which is stamped “Sanderson.” Also present is a reissue date, 1912 and the corresponding inspection/reissue stamp. The obverse ricasso bears the War Department broad arrow, bend test stamp and three Enfield inspection and acceptance stamps.

The hooked quillon crosspiece retains its blueing, as does the steel pommel. There is some mild wear. The pommel is stamped with the regimental markings 4.N.STF and the issue number 391. The wooden grip scales are in good condition and are held firmly in place by the two original screws. Both scales are deeply stamped with BB and have a great patina. The push button locking mechanism is in good condition and the action is crisp.

The bayonet is complete with its very rare No1 Mk 1 leather scabbard with an internal chape and a teardrop frog stud. The Mk 1 scabbard was only produced for one year, between April 1908 and April 1909.

The scabbard is in very good condition with its original blued finish to the locket. The leather and stitching are strong. The leather is stamped with the War Department arrow and EFD maker mark above an Enfield factory inspection stamp and the date ‘09. The opposite side of the seam is stamped with the numeral 5. An inverted arrows sold out of service stamp is also present. The steel locket bears a crowned Enfield inspection stamp. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is great example of a rare British hooked quillon P1907 bayonet, unit marked and with its even rarer No.1 Mk I scabbard.
