This British 1896 pattern cavalry sword was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company in 1903.

The 890mm single-edged blade has a thick, flat spine and is double-edged for the last 220mm, terminating in a spear point. The spine is stamped with the Wilkinson serial number 39848 indicating that the sword was made in 1903 and enabling research into the swords’ original owner. The blade retains its factory service edge and is crisply etched with the flowers of the union (rose, thistle & shamrock) amidst foliate scrollwork. Below this is the rayed crown and cypher of King Edward VII above crossed palm and laurel fronds. The forte bears the English coat of arms and the motto, “Dieu Et Mon Droit” over a banner etched with “By Warrant.” The obverse of the blade bears similar foliate and floral scrollwork and the Kings’ crown and royal coat of arms above crossed laurels and palms. The forte bears an empty cartouche.

The ricasso is etched with the makers’ details; Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall. London. The obverse ricasso bears a Wilkinson proof stud bearing the italicised initials, HW.

The blade is in overall excellent condition, bright and clean with only a few small patches of pale tarnish, mostly towards the point.

The pierced steel bowl guard is of the “scroll” or “honeysuckle” pattern and retains its original plating with minor wear. The shagreen grip is in good condition and the twisted wire binding is intact and tight. The back strap is fully chequered and incorporates a chequered oval pommel. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its plated steel scabbard. The scabbard is in good condition with spotting to the plating and a small patch of flaking (shown). The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a good example of a scarce Edward VII British Cavalry sword by the Wilkinson Sword Company.
