British Pattern 1888 Mk II Lee Metford Rifle Bayonet made by Sanderson of Sheffield in March 1902.

This desirable bayonet is in excellent condition for its 119 years of age and is highly collectable. The 306mm double-edged blade is marked on the ricasso with a crown above ER (Edward Rex) and the production date, 3 ‘02 (March, 1902) over the manufacturer’s details; Sanderson, Sheffield.

The obverse ricasso is marked with the War Department arrow, a Sanderson factory inspection mark and a bend test stamp. The blade spine also bears two inspection stamps. The blade is in very good condition.

The wooden grip is firm and in good condition with two brass rivets. The facing grip scale is stamped with the number 219. The rear scale bears a crowned inspection stamp. The steel crosspiece and pommel are bright and free from rust. The pommel is stamped above the clearing hole with V over JOA above the number 73. The obverse of the pommel bears a sold out of service mark. The press-stud locking mechanism is in good working order.

The bayonet is complete with its black leather scabbard with steel mounts. The steel locket and chape are in good condition and bear Enfield inspection marks. The black leather is in good condition and is stamped with the War Department arrow, EFD makers’ mark and an Enfield inspection stamp. The stitching is intact and tight. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a very good example of the iconic British Lee Metford rifle bayonet complete with unit markings.
