British Pattern 1888 Mk I Type II Lee Metford Rifle Bayonet marked to the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), which was the oldest and most senior line infantry regiment of the British army. The regiment was raised in 1633 during the reign of Charles I of Scotland and served continuously until 2006 when it was merged with the other Scottish regiments to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

This scarce bayonet is in excellent condition for its 130+ years of age and is highly collectable. The 303mm double-edged blade is marked on the ricasso with a flat crown above VR (Victoria Regina) and the production date, 6 ‘91 (June, 1891). The obverse ricasso is marked with EFD, the Enfield maker’s mark, the British War Department broad arrow, a bend test stamp and an Enfield factory inspection stamp.

The blade spine bears two Enfield inspection stamps. The blade is in excellent condition with some minor sharpening and use related scratches. The blade retains a fighting edge.

The wooden grip is firm and in good condition with age and use related dings and marks. Two large brass rivets positioned close together hold the scales securely in place. The wooden hilt scales are drilled with an oil hole on both sides above the top rivet. The steel crosspiece and pommel are bright and free from rust. The press-stud locking mechanism is in good working order. The pommel is stamped with the markings of the 8th Battalion of the Royal Scots, weapon number 380. An earlier issue to the 6th battalion of the same regiment has been over-stamped and the earlier issue/weapon number cancelled.

The edges of the tang bear an inspection stamp and the letter G on one side and a K on the obverse.

The bayonet is complete with its Enfield made black leather scabbard with steel mounts. The steel locket and chape are stamped with Enfield inspection marks. The leather is strong and the stitching intact. The leather is stamped with a faint Broad Arrow and inspection mark. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is an excellent example of the iconic British Boer War and Boxer Rebellion bayonet issued to a prestigious British regiment.
