This fantastic 1857 pattern Royal Engineer Officer’s sword was presented to Lt. Percy T. Bourne by the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in 1887. The presentation sword was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company, London, and awarded for exemplary conduct whilst at Sandhurst.
The 835mm single edged blade has a wide fuller on both sides below a flat spine. The spine bears the Wilkinson number 28197 and an arrow indicating the centre of percussion. The blade terminates in a spear point and is beautifully etched with floral and foliate scrollwork encompassing a scalloped panel containing the dedication, “Presented to gentleman cadet Percy T. Bourne on obtaining his commission from the Royal Military Academy for his exemplary conduct whilst at the institution, 1887.”
The obverse of the blade is etched with the crowned Royal cypher of Queen Victoria amidst foliate scrollwork. The ricasso bears the proof stud of Henry Wilkinson. The obverse ricasso is etched with the maker’s details, Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London.
The blade is in excellent, near mint condition and is firm in the hilt.
The attractive acanthus leaf guard is in near mint condition with its original gilt finish. The shagreen covered grip is in excellent condition and the gilt twisted wire binding is intact and tight. The gilt brass back strap has the knurled thumb rest and pommel characteristic of the Engineer pattern sword.
The sword is complete with its original steel scabbard with two suspension rings. The scabbard is in great condition with tiny speckles to the nickel plating. The throat of the scabbard is stamped, “Wilkinson Pall Mall.” The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a near mint condition Royal Engineers presentation sword made by Henry Wilkinson and with a named and researchable officer.
