This British 1856 pattern Victorian Royal Artillery officer’s sword was made by Robert Mole of Birmingham.

The 898mm blade is single-edged with a flat spine over a broad, three-quarter length fuller. The blade terminates in a spear point and retains its service edge. The blade is double-edged for the final 300mm.

The blade is etched with ogee and trefoil arches, foliate scrollwork above the Royal Arms of England, a lion and unicorn rampant with the motto Dieu Et Mon Droit. Below this is the bannered motto, “Ubique” (Everywhere), above a field gun and the Royal Artillery motto, “Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt.” Where fate and glory lead.

The obverse is etched with arches and foliate scrollwork above the crowned cypher of Queen Victoria and the legend, Royal Artillery.

The ricasso bears the brass, shooting stars proof disk of Robert Mole. The obverse ricasso bears the maker’s details, Robert Mole & Sons Birmingham, Makers to the War and India Offices.

The blade and etching are in very good condition, with some slight wear to the etching in places and tiny areas of tarnish.

The three-bar steel guard is in good condition with loss of plating and small spots of tarnish. The shagreen covered grip is in good condition with use-related wear. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its polished steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. The scabbard is in good condition with light scratches and patches of pale speckled tarnish. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a good example of a Victorian Artillery officer’s sword with a clean, etched blade by a top English maker.
