This 1827/92 pattern rifle officer’s sword was the property of Lieutenant, later Captain Malcolm McGibbon, an officer in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). The Cameronians saw action in France, Gallipoli, Egypt, Macedonia and Palestine during WW1. The regiment received 55 battle honours and won three Victoria Crosses as well as numerous additional awards for bravery.

Early in World War One, Malcolm McGibbon was promoted to temporary second Lieutenant. On 12 July 1915, he was further promoted to temporary Lieutenant. On the 4th December 1917 he was promoted to full Captain. In September 1918, Captain McGibbon led the first wave of the attack during the second Battle of Doiran in the Salonika Campaign (Macedonia). The remainder of Capt. McGibbon’s military career is still to be researched.

The 840mm single-edged blade is of the 1892 pattern and has a broad and deep central fuller giving it a dumbbell cross-section for the first half of its length. From the mid-point, the blade has a triangular cross section and tapers to an 85mm double-edged spear point.

The blade is etched with foliate scrollwork, the crowned royal cypher of George V and the strung horn of the rifles. A cartouche on the forte bears the dedication, M. McGibbon. Scottish Rifles. The obverse of the blade is etched with foliate scrollwork and the cypher of King George V.

The blade is in very good condition, retaining its original polish with only a few tiny speckles of tarnish.

The Gothic steel guard incorporates an oval cartouche containing the crown and strung horn of the Rifle Regiment. The guard is bright and rust free and is in very good condition, retaining its original plating. The shagreen grip is in good condition and the twisted wire is intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The black leather covered field scabbard is in good condition and remains strong. The scabbard has minor use related scuffs and marks and the leather frog strap is frayed. There is some mild damage to the shoe of the scabbard. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly from the scabbard.

This is an excellent, named Scottish Rifles officer’s sword from the Great War.
