This WW1, George V Rifle officer’s sword was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company in 1914 and bears the hexagonal “best quality” proof stud.

The 826mm, 1892 pattern thrusting blade is of dumbbell form, having a symmetrical cross section with slightly rounded spine and belly and a short central fuller. The blade becomes wedge shaped for approximately two-thirds of its length and terminates in a narrow, double-edged spear point.

The blade is in excellent condition and is deeply etched with King George V royal cipher below the crown and royal arms amidst foliate scrollwork panels. The obverse of the blade has the Rifle Brigade’s strung horn below a blank cartouche and royal crown. The ricasso bears the royal warrant and the maker’s details, “Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London.” The obverse ricasso bears a hexagonal proof stud used to denote best quality.  The blade spine bears the serial number 48785 and “London Made.” The blade has been professionally service sharpened, most likely by Wilkinson by request of the purchaser.

The Gothic steel guard is in very good condition and incorporates an oval cartouche containing the crowned badge of the Rifle Regiment. The fish skin grip is in very good condition with some age related discolouration. The twisted silver wire is intact and tight. The guard retains its original nickel plating with minimal loss and only a few speckles of tarnish. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The brown leather covered field scabbard has a nickel throat. The leather is in good condition and the stitching is sound. The scabbard is in overall great condition but is missing the frog strap. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a very good example of a high quality early Great War rifle officer’s sword that was a bespoke order from the Wilkinson Sword Company. The serial number could be used to research the identity and military career of the original owner.
