British 1821 pattern Royal Artillery officer’s sword made by Pillin, London.
The 900mm blade is single edged and has a slightly rounded spine over a broad single fuller. The slightly curved blade terminates in a spear point. The point is missing the last 1-2mm. The blade is double-edged for the final 140mm and was service sharpened. There is one small nick in the edge around the centre of percussion.
The blade is in good condition with some small, scattered spots of tarnish, most, if not all of which should polish out. The ricasso bears the maker’s details, “Pillin. Maker. Gerrard St. London.” The obverse ricasso is missing the brass proof stud.
The blade is etched with scrolled foliate panels above and below a field gun and flaming grenade. The obverse is etched with similar foliate scrollwork and the winged lightning bolts of the Royal Artillery.
The three-bar steel guard is in good condition and would benefit from a polish. The shagreen covered grip is in good condition with mild service wear to the shagreen. The three strands of wire binding are intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.
Overall this is a nice example of a British Royal Artillery officer’s sword.
