This scarce quill-pointed, brass hilted sword is very similar to the regulation pattern 1821 for British Light Cavalry officers. The same pattern was adopted by the Royal horse artillery. This sword however has a blade that is 105mm shorter than the regulation pattern 1821/1822 for light cavalry and artillery officers. The 3-bar guard is also non-regulation in that it is brass and not steel.

I believe that this sword may have been a bespoke order for a field artillery officer, someone commanding a gun crew close to the front line and so likely to be required to fight on foot in defence of the battery.

The 795mm pipe back blade is single edged with a large 350mm quill point with prominent yelman. The slightly curved blade is double edge for the last 350mm.

The blade is in good condition with a few small areas of shallow pitting and tarnish. The blade is undecorated apart from a tablet on the forte containing the cutler’s details - Lambert, Brown & Co. Dame Street, Dublin.

The brass three-bar guard is in good condition. The plain brass back strap, with slightly raised thumb section is finished with a stepped oval pommel and peened tang.

The shagreen covered grip is in very good condition and the three strands of brass wire are intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.

This is a very nice example of a scarce, early 1821 pattern quill-pointed sword.
