This rare, Sheble & Fischer made American model 1840 heavy cavalry sabre, commonly referred to as the “Wrist-breaker” was one of the military sabres used by U.S. mounted forces before and during the American Civil War (1861-65). Sheble & Fischer of Philadelphia were awarded a federal government contract to make swords for the Civil War but only produced 1,203 M1840 sabres.

The 895mm Montmorency style blade has a short narrow fuller above a long, wide fuller. The blade is in excellent condition and retains its original polish with some minor scratches. The blade was sharpened for action. The ricasso is marked with the Sheble & Fischer maker’s mark. The mark is worn but readable. The obverse ricasso is plain. Sheble & Fischer made M1840 sabres are often found without government inspection marks.

The heavy, three-branch brass hilt is stamped on the back of the beaked quillon with the number 602. There is also a small unidentified stamp and the crudely scratched initials H.R.E. The guard is in good condition and exhibits a beautiful and untouched patina. The grip is in reasonable condition for its age and use. The grip is without its twisted brass wire. The original leather is in good condition with some age and use related marks and a small loss at the front. The leather covers a wooden handle wrapped with cord for added grip. The peen is undisturbed.

The scabbard is in very good condition with some pitting at the very bottom and on the over-sized shoe. Sheble & Fischers’ scabbards are known for having a large shoe. The scabbard is free from rust and has a great brown patina. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly in the scabbard.

This is an excellent example of the famous US cavalry sabre by a rare maker.
