This American infantry hanger dates to the early 19th Century, probably around 1812. Swords of this type were carried by militia officers and were also popular with American naval and merchant-marine officers.

The 700mm curved blade is typical of those from the period (almost identical to the regulation 1812 cavalry sabre blades made by William Rose and Nathan Starr) and has a flat spine with a narrow, ¾ length fuller directly below. The blade is double-edged for the last 140mm. The sword retains a sharp fighting edge.

The unmarked blade is in overall good condition for its age and service. The steel is mostly bright with scattered tarnish and some pitting, mainly at the point and the forte.

The brass stirrup hilt is in great condition. The flattened “P” guard is of early form, without a back-strap to the leather wrapped wooden grip. The grip is finished with a single strand of twisted brass wire. The blade is firm in the hilt.

This is a good example of an early American infantry hanger from the period of the War of 1812.
