This American WW1 1917 Pattern bayonet for the Enfield .30 calibre rifle was made by Remington in 1918. At the beginning of the year, Remington mistakenly used the manufacture date, 1918 in place of the pattern designation. The bayonet should be stamped with the designation 1917. This error was soon rectified and 1918 stamped Remington P17 bayonets are scarce.

The 432 mm blade has a deep single fuller on both sides and a rounded spine. The blade is in excellent condition and has been service sharpened.

The blued ricasso is incorrectly stamped with the year, 1918 instead of the 1917 pattern designation above the Remington maker’s mark. The obverse ricasso bears the “flaming grenade” over “US” ordnance stamp and the eagle head, numbered inspection stamp. The cross guard and pommel retain most of their original blueing and the wooden hilt scales are in excellent condition. The press-stud locking mechanism works perfectly. The pommel is stamped with the US Army unit designation “B L I” over the issue number 137.

The bayonet is complete with its original green leather scabbard, which is in very good condition with staining and marks from age and use. The locket and chape retain their original blueing. The hanger wire has been removed from the locket. The green leather is firm and undamaged with the stitching intact and strong.

This 1918 miss-stamped Remington P1917 bayonet is in excellent condition and unit marked, making it a rare example of a relatively common bayonet.
