The Kris or Keris is one of the most famous bladed weapons. They were, and still are a symbol of a man’s status in society as well as being a powerful talisman. Kris blades are wide at the base, double-edged, and often wavy. Older Kris had fewer waves, with the waves tending to be wider apart. As Kris became more symbolic and less for offence/defence, the waves became closer together, and more numerous. The higher the number of waves, the more potent a Kris’ talismanic power.

This 18th Century, central Javanese Kris has a 365mm double-edged blade with three widely spaced waves along its edges. Opposite the protruding guard, is the stylised representation of the beak of an eagle or mouth of a Naga, a mythical snake. The blade is in worn condition and is very sharp. Traditionally, Kris were polished and sharpened during an annual ceremony. There are a few tiny patches of shallow pitting and tarnish and a few nicks along the forward edge, consistent with use.

The seven faceted Surakarta hilt is made of Gahary, a dark hardwood. The stylized pommel has an intricately carved design on the underside (leaf). A second carved panel is located on the underside of the hilt (stomach) above the cup-like, ornate brass collar. The hilt is in excellent condition with a great patina. The blade is firm in the hilt.
