This rare European hunting sword dates from the mid 1700’s. These swords, called in France “Couteau de Chasse,” were used when hunting to clear undergrowth and to deliver the coup-de-grace to wounded animals. Short swords like this were also adopted as side arms by seafarers. William Gilkerson in his book “Boarders Away: With steel – Edged Weapons and Polearms” documents their regular use by Royal Navy officers.

The use of the name “Cuttoe” to describe these weapons is an Anglicisation of their French name by English sailors.

The 540mm slightly curved blade is single-edged and has a saw-toothed spine. The hollow ground blade is un-fullered. The 54 saw teeth gradually reduce in size towards the point. The blade is double-edged for the last 150mm. The edges and the saw teeth remain sharp.

The blade is in reasonable condition for its 270 plus years of age. The steel has shallow pitting along its length and has been cleaned. The blade is bright and rust free.

The hilt comprises a stag antler grip with a brass scallop shell. The brass knuckle bow extends into a rearward facing ball quillon. The antler grip is finished with a brass bolster and pommel cap through which the tang is peened. The hilt is in good condition with minor scuffs and the antler grip has a great age patina. The blade is firm in the hilt.

This is a beautiful and rare mid-18th Century saw toothed hunting sword.
