This interesting mid 18th Century English Court sword has been modified to allow for a better fencing style grip and in so doing improves its handling for use as a duelling sword. This modification was achieved by removing the quillion and chain guard, a refinement that was carried out centuries ago as indicated by there being no difference between the colouration of the cut surfaces and the sword’s hilt.
32 inch / 81.5 cm triangular section incurved blade without maker’s mark. Steel hilt with oval dish guard applied with buttons.
Urn shaped pommel and faceted grip. Originally this sword would have had a chain guard which would have been removed at the time of its modification for duelling.
The blade has a uniformly salt and pepper grey patina consistent with its age. The hilt has the great plum-brown patina of centuries old iron.
The blade and hilt are in good condition. There is some movement between the hilt and dish guard.
A rare and interestingl duelling sword.
