This is a good example of a Victorian 1845 pattern infantry officer’s sword made by Pillin between 1870 & 1892, and retailed by Nicoll of Regent Street, London.
The 820mm “Wilkinson” pattern blade has a broad fuller running for over two-thirds of its length. The blade terminates in a spear point and is etched with panels of scrolling foliage above and below a rayed crown and the cypher of Queen Victoria. The obverse of the blade is similarly etched.
The ricasso bears the cutler’s details, “Nicoll. Regent St, London.” The obverse ricasso bears a Pillin proof stud that was used between 1870 and 1892.
The blade is in good condition. The blade was service sharpened and has two contact nicks on its edge. The etching is clear and the blade has only a few small patches of pale tarnish.
The Gothic brass guard bears an oval with the cypher of Queen Victoria above the Flowers of the Union. The shagreen wrapped grip is in good condition. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The sword is complete with its steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. The scabbard is in good condition, with one shallow ding towards the bottom. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a nice example of an 1845 pattern Victorian infantry officer’s sword.
