This is a great example of a 19th Century Zulu Iklwa. Many Zulu weapons were collected by the British troops and brought back to the UK as souvenirs after the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
The 230mm blade has a raised medial ridge. The broad, leaf-shaped blade is 56mm at its widest and is in good condition with a great patina that adds to its character.
While the Zulu King was responsible for providing his warriors with shields, the individual Zulu warrior was responsible for his own weaponry. This iklwa was probably the property of a junior warrior, one that would have fought as part of the flanks (the horns) in the Zulu bulls-head attack formation. The youngest warriors were placed on the flanks as they had the speed and endurance to race ahead to outflank the enemy, while the older, seasoned warriors made up the centre (the boss of the horns).
The blade is secured firmly within the haft and woven brass and iron wire strengthens the bond. The woven wire is in great condition and the blade is firm in the haft.
The 1030mm haft has a large flared end and a wonderful patina. The total length of the iklwa is 49.5 inches / 126cm.
This excellent 19th Century Iklwa will make a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War collection.
