Imperial German Army model 1890 Officer's Sword known as a “Dove Head” sword or Heer Mannschaftsabel. This sword dates to World War 1, and is complete with its rare leather scabbard. Most scabbards for this model were of nickel-plated steel.
The 790mm curved blade has a single fuller and flat spine terminating in a spear point with upper false edge. The blade is in generally excellent condition with only a few small areas of tarnish and loss to the plating. The blade has been plated since its original manufacture – maybe for re-use in World War II as this pattern was in service until 1945. Later models, those manufactured in the 1930’s onwards tended to be more ornate and included Nazi symbols.
The plain brass guard is in excellent condition. The grip retains its shagreen and much of the original twisted silver wire wrap. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The rare dark brown/black leather scabbard with brass furniture is in very good condition. The leather is strong and the stitching is tight and intact. There is a crease in the leather above the drag and minor marks and scuffs consistent with its age and use. The long brass drag has a few minor dents and there is minimal age shrinkage. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
