This un-etched Georgian 1796 Light Cavalry Officer’s Sabre was probably made during Britain’s preparations for the return to Portugal and the resumption of the campaign against Napoleon’s troops in the Iberian Peninsula.

The 820mm curved blade has a flat spine above a wide, shallow fuller and terminates in a hatchet point. The spine is without a maker’s mark. The blade is un-etched and was service sharpened with three edge nicks suggesting combat use. This sword was intended for fighting as opposed to wearing for show. The officer may have had a second sabre with blue and gilt etching to be worn for dress occasions.

The blade is in very good condition.

The stirrup hilt has a plain back strap with comma-shaped ears. The steel is bright and in good condition with a mottled age patina and pin-pricks of shallow pitting. The leather wrapped grip is in worn condition, consistent with use. The grip retains its twisted silver wire. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sabre is complete with its steel scabbard, which is in overall good condition with two dings and cleaned pitting along its length. The scabbard retains its wooden lining and the sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard. The wear to the twin ring bands is indicative of the sabre having a long service life.

This is a good example of a Napoleonic Wars period light cavalry officers’ fighting sabre.
